I think everyone has a latent fear of the Earth opening up and swallowing them. Guatemala City however is a bit of a different case I believe. Aside from earthquakes, mudslides, and volcano's that have affected the city in years past, sinkholes are now swallowing parts of the city.
The latest sinkhole, 18 meters wide and 60 meters deep swallowed a three story building near an intersection in the city. In 2007 a sinkhole opened up in another area of the city that was 100 meters deep.

Personally, I'm thinking its all an excellent case of bad city planning.
