Mortal Kombat Rebirth

Postby skati on Wed Jun 16, 2010 10:38 am

I randomly stumbled upon this while looking up Boondocks music the other day. It was on the front page of Youtube. Apparently this was a short film to pitch to Hollywood or something and make a full length movie of if someone agrees to fund it.

Looks like they're trying for a more realistic version of Mortal Kombat, near as I can tell, by changing the origins of a couple characters (Reptile and Baraka). Kind of meh on it, but hey. If the rest of the fights in the movie are as good as that Johnny Cage vs Baraka fight, I'll watch it just for those. Also, that's Michael Jai White as Jax (jackson Briggs) and Lateef Crowder (that Capoeira fighter that shows up in several movies) as Baraka. Not sure who the others are.

Michael Jai White was originally considered to be Jax for MK: Annhilation. Heh, odd.

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand I like the idea and new take and the fight scene was great. Although Cage seems to be getting killed a lot in MK since in every incarnation he's been killed (killed in games, movies, and this potential remake!).

On the other hand, however, I don't know if I like the removal of the MK Mythology. Reptile no longer a Raptor/Saurian?, Baraka no longer Tarkatan, nothing about realms or saving mankind. Wonder how they're going to portray Sub-Zero without him being a cryomancer? They've removed the magic of MK. It makes it all gritty and real and stuff but they're also taking away the very thing that made MK such a success.

They have been trying to get a new MK movie out for many years now. Maybe this would help? I'd love to see a new MK movie, a restart for freshness like with Batman (so much prefer the new movies over old).

I've got one theory. Given everything else, I bet they're going to have the power be in his gauntlets somehow. I'm thinking exaggerated/massive amounts of liquid nitrogen or some other super cold substance that he ejects from the gauntlets and freezes people. It might be more of a touch attack rather than the ranged stuff he had in the games and first two movies. If it is a range thing though, it might be much shorter than what he had before.
